I thought I'd share one more story from the book "Where are the People? by Sidney Powell. This book written during World War II, in many ways was ahead of its time when it comes to reaching those whom the church are letting slip through their hands.
The question has to be asked, How can we let opportunities to be Jesus to people pass us by? We may not want to know the answer. Listen to this story from the book.
"The Sunday-school superintendent looked over the record books in Dr. S. Parkes Cadman's church in Brooklyn, New York. After the name of a little redheaded boy, Jimmie, the teacher had made a laconic entry "Left." That was all. He had left. Evidently no one knew why or where he had gone. He had simply left; so what of it? The superintendent decided it might be interesting to follow up Jimmie. He found the address in a back alley and made his way up to the garret where Jimmie lived. In response to his knock at the door a weak voice called, "Come in." There on a tousled bed Jimmie was tossing in pain, a great bandage around his head. He explained that a horse had kicked him.
The superintendent returned from his visit and wrote in the teacher's book after the entry "Left," "to die with a hole in his head." Smitten by conscience when he read this addendum, the teacher hunted up his sick and lonely scholar. The lad greeted him with joy, "Oh, I knew you'd come, teacher! I've looked so long for you." But the teacher realized Jimmie was sinking fast, and while he sat by his side the thin tether of life snapped and he slipped away into eternity. How many are left to die, physically, or spiritually, with a hole in their heads or in their lives!
It is so easy of drop people from the roll. What happened to them? We don't know; they just left. But it is our business to know!"
