Is it any wonder that the Christian faith seems to be becoming a minority in this country? You can enter too many churches today and find the Christians embroiled in some argument among themselves. It has long been a joke that many churches split over a disagreement about the color of the carpet, but the fact is this is too often the case. If I were a new believer or someone curious about Christianity and saw these arguments going on in the church, I would not have any interest in returning to church myself.

People outside of the church can also be confused as to what a Christian really believes. Today each church and denomination has it's own special pet beliefs that are emphasized. It bothers me when you listen to a particular group or preacher and all you hear is the same thing over and over. They become enthralled about one particular teaching or doctrine and that is all you ever hear from them.

For the Catholic, their focus is on the supremacy of their church.

The Pentecostal and Charismatic believer is so focused on the Spirit and spiritual gifts such as tongues and healing that you rarely hear them talk about anything else.

The Reformed theologian thinks all theology is wrapped around the topics of predestination and election.

Some independent churches become so engrossed in defending the old King James Version that they will not have anything to do with someone who doesn't use their Bible.

Others focus every sermon on prophecy and end times to the exclusion of everything else.

There are also Baptists, who are so proud of their denomination, that the denomination is about all you hear them talk about.

Though each of these topics have their place, none of them are worthy of being the sole exclusive focus of a Christian. The Bible tells us what our focus should be on:

Hebrews 12:1-2a
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...

1 Corinthians 2:2
For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

If we are called Christians, which means Christ followers, why don't we focus our attention on being like Christ? Why don't we focus more on who He was, what He was, and what He did for us? Why don't we seek to learn more about how He lived during His earthly ministry and learn how to imitate His actions. Why don't we learn more about what He taught and live by His precepts?

After all, if you are a Christian worth your salt, you say you believe Jesus was the Son of God, come in the flesh to die for your sins. You say you believe He has risen from the grave proving His power over sin and death. You say you believe He is coming back again one day. Why then, do you focus on anything other than Him?

Jesus is not a tag along in your theological arguments, He is the center of all things!
